Malaysian Muaythai Association Eye Gold At 2019 Sea Games
KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Muaythai Association (PMM) is targeting at least one gold medal in the 2019 SEA Games 2019 to be held in the Philippines this November.
PMM president Muhammad Shahnaz Azmi said high hopes were placed on two athletes, namely Mohamad Rifdean Masdor and Mohd Fazzatkie Mohd Zaki based on their outstanding performances in local and international tournaments.
"We are targeting a gold medal, but we see that two athletes, Mohamad Rifdean in the 45kg category and Mohd Fazzatkie in the 57kg category have the potential to win gold, but this does not mean that other athletes cannot step up with their best performance in the SEA Games," he told a press conference after holding a working committee meeting with the National Sports Council here Tuesday.
Asked about the squad’s participation in the Games, Muhammad Shahnaz said they would be competing in five categories including one women’s category, as the Philippines only allowed other ASEAN countries to compete in a maximum of five categories.
For the record, Malaysia won two gold medals in the Muaythai event for both the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar and the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
