Foreign minister hailed Lao-Thai cooperation on border

(KPL) Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith hailed many achievements in the Lao-Thai cooperation on their border claiming their armies are playing an important role in keeping peace along their common border.
At his press conference to the media, Dr. Thongloun briefed the fruit of the 15th meeting between Subcommittee for Lao-Thai border Security Cooperation in Luang Prabang province between 23-25 last month saying both sides agreed to do their utmost in cracking down the movement of any forces using their national lands to trouble the Lao-Thai cooperation.
The meeting agreed to assign the armies in their respective countries to continue to finish repatriating the Lao Hmong people back to their homeland by the end of 2009 in accordance to their bilateral mechanisms.
The Lao side expressed its grateful thanks to its Thai counterpart in providing a grant 1.5 million Thai baht to set up village dispensaries.
Both sides agreed to further completing their border demarcation in 2010 by speeding up their cooperative works.
The Lao side informed the Thai delegation of its upgrading Lao-Thai border checkpoint in Sayaboury province as an international border checkpoint to boost tourism, trade and investment between Laos and Thailand.
The meeting also hailed the opening new transboundary passenger transportation routes between two countries and urged their relevant authorities to conduct feasibility study on opening three more routes.
Laos and Thailand have surveyed five transboundary passenger transportation routes so far.
Both sides expressed appreciation on that the Thai and Chinese governments are currently discussing the agreement on financial support for the construction of the fourth Mekong bridge between Huaysay (Laos) and Chiengkhong (Thailand) in order to have the construction begin in this year.
They agreed to cooperate in promoting and increasing the investment of Thai businesses in Laos and to promote their participation in developing the communities in which they have their investment activities based.
They also agreed to speeding up discussion on the contents of MOU on Contract Farming cooperation. It is expected that the MOU would be signed by both sides during the visit to Thailand of the Lao President in this May.
