JEMBRANA MAKING SEA WATER DRINKABLE

Denpasar, Indonesia, April 3 (ANTARA) - Bali's Jembrana district has succeeded in turning sea water into processed mineral water to meet the drinking water needs of local people, a spokesman said.

The water was now supplied to distribution points at 120 locations such as government offices, hospitals, and schools, Jembrana district administration spokesman Komang Wiasa said here on Friday.

"The oxygen in the processed mineral water from sea water can reach 29 ppm, or higher than the oxygen in packaged mineral water which is less than 25 ppm," Komang Wiasa said, adding that the people who consumed it regularly would stay young.

He said the processed mineral water from sea water was registered at the Food and Drug Supervisory Board (BPOM) and Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in 2006.

According to him, the initiative to turn sea water to mineral water was taken to deal with water scarcity and to reduce ground water exploitation.

"To anticipate global warming and water scarcity in Jembrana in the future, we have taken the initiative to turn sea water into mineral water, although at exorbitant costs," he said.

Meanwhile, Jembrana district head Prof I Gede Winasa admitted earlier that a total of Rp5.6 billion was needed for the new innovation but he added that nothing was expensive if it was for the interest of the people.

Gede Winasa said the new innovation to turn sea water into mineral water could also be applied in other areas suffering drinking water shortages.***
