PRESIDENT ASKS GOVERNORS TO PREVENT ELECTION FRAUD, MANIPULATIONS

Jakarta, April 8 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on regional government chiefs across the country to eliminate all possibilities of committing fraud or manipulations in Thursday's legislative elections.

The president made the call in a long-distance interactive dialog with provincial governors and regional police chiefs at the State Palace on Wednesday morning.

"Together, let us prevent election fraud and manipulations from happening in our respective areas," the president told his audience in the interactive dialog.

Yudhoyono also gave the assurance that no party in the government, including provincial leaders and district heads, would intentionally do something that could obstruct the elections.

"We have heard rumors that fraudulent practices will mar the elections. Therefore, let us respond to these rumors by eliminating all possibilities to commit fraud throughout the country," the president said.

He added that in the multi-party system, the possibility of fraud in election was small.

"The multi-party system itself has become 'check and balance'," the president said.

Yudhoyono asserted that the government, especially political and security officials, would make every possible effort to prevent any activity that could lead to anarchy and violence during and after the elections.

In the interactive dialog, the president received reports from the governors of West Sumatra, Jakarta, Central Java, South Kalimantan, Papua, Bali, South Sulawesi, and West Sulawesi that their provinces were ready for the implementation of the elections.
