Trade officers to control runaway increase in prices of goods during Pi Mai

(KPL) The officers of the office of Industry and Commerce of Saythany district would be taking proactive measures to control the prices of goods in the three markets, located in its territory and it is to prevent any runaway increase in the prices of goods during the Pi Mai Lao celebration next week.
Merchants are likely to take advantage of this celebration period to increase the prices of goods as they had done in the past years.
“Our staff will be sent to inspect and monitor the price of goods in three markets, That Luang, That Luang Bus Station and Huakhao,” said Mr Khamphao Bouttavong, Head of Office of Industry and Commerce of Saythany district.
He also said that the steps that he had taken were a follow-up of an order that was issued on March 11 by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
According to his observation, he told KPL News, the prices of fresh goods in the markets this week and that is one week before the Pi Mai celebration was not as volatile as the same period last year.
In the case of 2008, the increase in prices began from the first week before Pi Mai Lao celebration and the affected items were meat, fish, vegetables and fruits, he continued.“During this period many companies and state agencies organized parties for their staff so that buyers flooded the markets, making it a sellers’ market,” he added.
Mr Khamphao said that for the last two weeks, the prices of fresh chillies, lettuce, lemon and the other fresh goods had been ratcheted up, for example, the tilapia fish increased from 18,000 to 22,000 kip per kilogram.
All the while, he said the trade authorities were monitoring the situation and they acted by working with the market staff and policemen to monitor the prices of 30 items of goods in the three markets and their prices were broadcasted by speakers strategically located in the markets.
The trade officers did not just monitor the prices of goods, Mr Khampao said, they also inspected the weighing machines of the retailers and they were also on the alert to spot the presence of smuggled goods.
