Polish Wojciech Nowicki Wins Bronze Medal in Men's Hammer Throw

Doha, October 03 (QNA) - Polish Pawel Fajdek won men's hammer throw gold in the IAAF World Athletics Championships held in Doha, while Wojciech Nowicki was awarded bronze. Both Poles were among the top favorites of the contest, leading this year's world rankings. This was confirmed during the qualifying stage, when they topped the standings as well. The second place went to the Frenchman Quentin Bigot (78.19m), while the Hungarian Bence Halasz claimed bronze (78.18m). Wojciech Nowicki, finished fourth, with 77.42m as his best result. However, after the contest, the Polish side lodged a protest, as they noticed that during his first and best attempt, Halasz stepped outside the circle and his throw should have been counted as invalid. The officials from the athletics federation acceded to this view, and, as the Hungarian's try determined the way he performed later, decided to award both Halasz and Nowicki bronze medals. In this competition, Qatar's player Ashraf Al Saifi came in ninth place and his first attempt was the best (75.41m) among his three attempts. (QNA)
