KDDI Develops "Waving" ID System for Mobile Devices

Tokyo, April 9 (Jiji Press)--KDDI Corp. <9433>, the operator of the
"au" mobile phone service, has developed a unique biometric authentication
system for mobile devices that requires users to only swing them, company
officials told Jiji Press on Thursday.
The system, developed jointly with Tokyo Institute of Technology,
enables users of devices such as mobile phones to get them identified by
swinging them.
The system has been made possible because each person has his or
her own unique style of swinging an arm. An acceleration sensor, a key
component in the system, is able to recognize and match swing trajectories.
KDDI officials said that the new system provides more security than
existing biometric authentication systems using palm veins, faces and
fingerprints.
The new system enables users to register different swing patterns,
the officials said.
KDDI hopes to launch a feasibility study of mobile devices equipped
with the system by the end of fiscal 2009 with an eye on eventual
commercialization, they said.
