Laos, Hong Kong invests in construction of an agriculture culture centre

(KPL) Laos and Hong Kong joined investment of US$3 million in the construction of an agricultural culture centre in Vientiane, aiming at developing and producing substitute energy crops to supply high current demand of local market.
This was a joint venture between Mekong Agriculture Company in cooperation with the bio-energy research and development project of Laos and the Agricultural Promotion Company of Hong Kong.
A ground breaking ceremony of the construction of centre took place in Ban Danxang, Saythany district, on 7 April.
The building is 22 metres long and 14 metres wide with 12 months of construction work after completing the building will be equipped with other technical device to use for analysing bio-diesel crops.
The centre expects to produce 1 million saplings per year in the first year and then over 15 million saplings annually.
Two companies invested in plantation of jatropha in 15 provinces, Laos and expect to grow about 500 to 5,000 hectares on each province.
The centre will research other substitute energy crops for producing bio-diesel in northern provinces what kinds of native crops would be the best to refine bio-diesel so as to reduce import of petrol in the future.
