HIV/AIDS STILL THREAT IN BANTEN
Serang, Indonesia, April 24 (ANTARA) - The HIV/AIDS disease is still a threat to the people of Banten province which ranks seventh on the list of the country's most affected provinces.
In the 2003-2009 period, Banten recorded a total of 1,413 HIV/AIDS cases of which 51 had ended in the sufferers' deaths, Arief Mulyawan, head of the AIDS control commission of Banten, said here on Friday.
HIV/AIDS had become a serious threat because how the disease was spreading in the province was still unknown, he said.
While the number of recorded HIV/AIDS cases in 2003-2009 was 1,413 , he said, he estimated that the actual number could be as high as 6,000 as many sufferers were not aware they had the disease or did not go to hospital for treatment.
The Serang General Hospital was currently treating 10 married women who got HIV/AIDS from their drug-addicted husbands, he said. ***
