UAE Health Ministry: UAE, Gulf countries free of swine flu
UAE Minister of Health and Chairman of the Supervisory Committee on Combating Swine Flu Humaid al-Qattami today stressed that the UAE and other Arabian Gulf countries are free of swine flu and that no cases of the infection have been reported in this region despite its close connection with the rest of the world.
During an inspection of the swine flu thermal-Imaging detectors and other medical procedures put in place at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport, Al-Qattami further stressed that the UAE has large strategic stocks of 5 million units of Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate), an antiviral medicine for flu treatment and flu prevention in adults and children.
He further stressed that hospitals nationwide are fully prepared to tackle any reported cases and that full coordination and cooperation is underway among all health authorities in Abu Dhabi, Dubai.
Swine flu thermal imaging devices, special cameras used for scanning passengers for swine influenza (H1N1) and detecting possible alterations in passengers' body temperatures, were installed at Dubai International Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport as part of the UAE's preventive measures against the disease.
The Minister viewed the devices at work when passengers of an Emirates Airline inbound flight from the United States.
Accompanied by the Chairman of the Technical Health Committee on Combating Swine Flu
and Director General of the Ministry of Health Dr Ali Ahmed Bin Shoukr, the Minister also inspected the procedures carried out by the airport medical teams tasked with competently dealing with any inbound suspected cases of swine flu.
The Minister said the preventive measures being taken by the UAE comply with the relevant requirements and standards set by the World Health Organization.
The Minister noted that an electronic daily bulletin will be posted on the Ministry's website to provide the latest updates, information and news on swine flu in both Arabic and English.
