SEOUL, May 5 Kyodo -
South Korea's health ministry reported Tuesday a second person has been
confirmed to have contracted Influenza A (H1N1).
The Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs said the person affected is
a 44-year-old woman who had apparently lived with the first confirmed H1N1
virus patient.
It is believed the latest patient caught the virus when she met with the first
patient at an airport west of Seoul last week, the ministry said.
Both the affected women are nuns.
The first confirmed patient, 51, was diagnosed a week ago but was discharged
from a military hospital Monday after being treated in quarantine, Yonhap News
Agency reported.
On Sunday, Yonhap said the first patient had been in Mexico doing community
service work and returned to South Korea on an April 26 flight from Los
Angeles.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday it is now
testing 36 people, in addition to one ''probable'' patient, for infection and
that a woman in her 20s was being ''closely examined,'' Yonhap reported.
On Sunday, Yonhap said a 62-year-old woman who was a passenger on the airplane
that returned the first confirmed patient to South Korea may also have
contracted the new-type flu virus.
Yonhap said more than 330 people were aboard the plane that arrived in South
Korea from Los Angeles on April 26.
