S'GOR GOVT ACTS TO PROTECT FIREFLY SANCTUARY

SHAH ALAM (Malaysia), May 6 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government will take over land in several areas in Kg Bukit Belimbing and Kg Kuantan to protect the firefly sanctuary in Kuala Selangor ( a town in Selangor state in Peninsular Malaysia).

Selangor executive councillor Elizabeth Wong the takeover involved
agriculture land on the banks of the Sungai Selangor and once completed a buffer
zone would be established to protect the sanctuary, which is a major tourist
attraction in the state.

If the action was not taken the firefly colonies in the area risked being
wiped out, she told a press conference after the weekly state executive council
meeting here Wednesday.

She added that a special fund would be launched soon to help preserve the
sanctuary.
