EMIRATES GROUP GETS MALAYSIAN INVEST INVITE

From Muin Abdul Majid

DUBAI, May 7 (Bernama) -- Emirates Group of the United Arab Emirates has been invited to invest in Malaysia in line with the recent move by the Malaysian government to liberalise the services sector, including tourism.

This was conveyed by Tourism Ministry's deputy secretary-general for
tourism, Abdul Ghaffar A. Thambi, in a meeting with Emirates Group
chairman Sheikh Ahmed Saeed Al-Maktoum.

"He appreciated the gesture and indicated that they would look into it," he
told Bernama on the sidelines of the ongoing Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2009 at
the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre here.

Recognising the growth potential in the services sector, Malaysia has
decided to liberalise 27 services sub-sectors, with no equity condition imposed.

These sub-sectors are in the areas of health and social services, tourism
services, transport services, business services and computer and related
services.

Under tourism services, foreign investment is welcomed in theme parks;
convention and exhibition centres (seating capacity of above 5,000); travel
agencies and tour operators services (for inbound travel only); and hotel and
restaurant services (for four- and five-star hotels only).

Others areas are food serving services (for services provided in four- and
five-star hotels only) and beverage serving services for consumption on the
premises (also for services provided in four- and five-star hotels only).

Abdul Ghaffar said he thanked the Emirates Airlines chairman for the
carrier's recent move to increase its flight frequency between Kuala Lumpur and
Dubai to 14 weekly from 12.

"This will surely translate into more visitors from the Middle East coming
to Malaysia, as Emirates is a popular airline among Arab travellers," he said.

The Emirates Group comprises Dnata, the airport ground service and travel
industry division, and Emirates, the group's international airline.

It is also home to several retail, leisure, transport and hospitality
affiliates.
