GRADING TO ENSURE MALAYSIA DOES NOT BECOME DUMPING GROUND
SEPANGGAR (Malaysia), May 11 (Bernama) -- The implementation of the
Packaging, Grading, and Labelling Regulation is vital in ensuring that the
country does not become a dumping ground for imported agricultural produce that
does not fulfil requirements.
Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) director-general, Mohamed
Shariff Abdul Aziz said, many of the imported agricultural products were
not graded or labelled.
"Because of this, our country has become a dumping ground as our consumers
love cheap goods ... so exporters take the opportunity to sell sub-standard
goods that did not pass the requirements in their country," he said.
He said this at the launching of an induction course for new Fama employees
in Sabah and Sarawak, both East Malaysia states respectively, here Monday,
officiated by Deputy Chief Minister Yahya Hussin, who is also Sabah Agriculture
and Food Industry Minister.
Mohamed Shariff said, through Regulation 3P imported and exported
agricultural products will be graded using a set standard, while cost of
imported goods would also be decided according to the grade.
He said the new regulation supervised by Fama had been made public and would
be implemented in stages by year-end.
"We are currently informing all parties of the regulation, including
relevant government agencies, so that they will be able to accept it," he
said.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Shariff said efforts to create more farmer's markets
in strategic location throughout the state are underway, including a proposal
for permanent farmer's market compared to the current mobile farmer's markets.
Yahya added that he will suggest for farmer's markets to be held daily.
Meanwhile, Yahya said the ministry and Fama would focus on expanding two
products from Sabah known for its quality, which are pomelo and ginger.
"We are exporting Sabah pomelo to Indonesia now, but supply is not enough,"
he said.
