THE PEOPLE COME FIRST IN STATE OF PERAK IMPASSE: DPM

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin
said Tuesday that all parties involved in the political impasse in northern
state of Perak must find a solution as soon as possible because the problem will
affect the people's well-being.

"We are worried if there is no comprehensive approach to tackle the problem
because it has dragged on for so long, so maybe all the parties could look at
other approaches although it is linked to the constitutional issue.

"We must look at everything from the aspect of the people's interest.
Whatever decision made must not ignore the people's interest and must be legal
so that the people will not face problems because the administration cannot
operate," he said after visiting the Education Technology Division of the
Education Ministry at Bukit Kiara here.

Muhyiddin said Prime Minister Najib Razak had expressed his willingness to
work out some form of cooperation to resolve the Perak conflict.

"The most important thing is that the people of Perak do not suffer from
this conflict. Whatever the decision, me want a a strong government there and
that government must help develop Perak," said Muhyiddin, who is also the
Education Minister.

Asked whether the federal ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) or National Front was
prepared to have fresh elections in Perak, he said "I cannot forecast what will
happen from now although the court ruled yesterday (Monday) that (Mohammad)
Nizar (Jamaluddin) is the menteri besar (Chief Minister).

"We (BN) will file an appeal against that decision today (Tuesday)."

Perak, Peninsular Malaysia's second largest state, was under the opposition
coalition government after last March's general election. The current
constitutional crisis in the state was triggered when three state assembly
members, two of them facing corruption charges, defected from the opposition
coalition, overturning the state government's slim majority. A fourth assembly
member had earlier defected from the BN to the PR but later hopped back to the
BN. With that, the current status of the house is 28 PR members, 28 BN members -
and three independents, who are pro-BN.

Nizar has maintained that the BN government is illegal and that the Sultan
has no constitutional right to dismiss him.
