Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Yukio Hatoyama expressed his
intention to run in Saturday's election to choose the next leader of the main
opposition party, DPJ lawmakers said.
Hatoyama conveyed his intention during a meeting with DPJ lawmakers supporting
him, becoming the first party executive to announce his candidacy in the
election to choose a successor to Ichiro Ozawa, who said Monday he would resign
in the wake of a political funds scandal involving his close aide.
