Thai PM to visit Hong Kong to encourage foreign investment

BANGKOK, May 14 (TNA) – Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will visit Hong Kong on Friday and brief businesspeople and investors on Thailand’s situation and the government’s latest economic stimulus package.

“I’ll meet all major groups and clarify our stance and policies so that they can make any decision based on accurate information about our country. We will spend a large amount of money in the second round of the stimulus package and we expect, with the facts in hand, this will attract foreign investors,” he said.

After all of the political turmoil in recent months and years, foreign investors needed to know the real facts, he said.

Hong Kong is a gateway to Thailand’s and other major markets, thus the business perspectives of both financial investors and non-financial investors there needs to be accurate and informed. The political situation and other social components also have a strong bearing on the perception of the quality of Thai goods and production capacity, said the prime minister.

Asked if the postponement of the ASEAN summit is likely to affect investor confidence, Mr. Abhisit said it should not be a problem because investors could see the government’s measures to control the situation after the cancellation of the ASEAN summit in Pattaya were working well.

The government managed to bring back normalcy after a mass protest in Bangkok during the Songkran festival and "now we have the parliamentary committee on reconciliation," he added.

During his one-day trip, Mr. Abhisit will meet Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang. He said their meeting would focus on cooperation and regional development, not on the matter of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

He said if asked by foreign media about the ex-premier, he was ready to clarify the facts. (TNA)
