MALAYSIAN COMPANIES INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN BUSINESS FORUM IN INDIA
KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- A total of 40 chief executive officers of local companies from three sectors, namely property development, construction-infrastructure and professional services are expected to attend the
Malaysia-India Business Council (MIBC) CEO Forum in India.
MIBC president Krishnan Tan said the forum would showcase the experience and
capabilities of Malaysian businesses to potential clients in India and
participate in a multi-billion development project presented by the fast growing
Indian economy.
"The construction industry is expected to become US$120 billion (US$1.00 =
RM3.54) in size by 2012 from the present US$70 billion," he said at
a media briefing here Thursday.
The four-day forum will be held in the southern India cities of Chennai and
Bangalore from June 16-19. It is jointly organised by MIBC and the Federation of
Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
The forum theme is, "Capabilities and Collaborations".
Presently, construction is the second largest economic activity after
agriculture and accounts for 11 percent of India's gross domestic product (GDP),
Krishnan said, citing a report from the Construction Industry Development Board
(CIDB).
"The country's dismal state of infrastructure is one of the biggest
stumbling block that is preventing India from achieving a 10 percent plus
economic growth rate. The desperate need for infrastructure development has
increased the demand of the construction industry," he said.
Krishnan said over 25 million new housing units were required in seven
years, while the real estate market is projected to grow to US$60 billion by
next year boosted by large demand-supply gap in affordable housing, increasing
demand for commercial and office space.
It is estimated that over 2004-2014, an annual average of about US$6.30
billion would be invested in widening, strengthening and maintenance of
national highways and state highways.
"We are confident that Malaysian companies with experience in the property
and construction sectors will succeed in India if given the proper opportunities
and introduction," he said.
For further details, interested companies may contact MIBC administrator at
03-7985 8137 or 03-7985 8288.
