30 STOLEN VEHICLES FROM M'SIA FOUND IN S'PORE
SHAH ALAM (Malaysia), May 15 (Bernama) -- Thirty vehicles, including MPVs,
all worth about RM2.3 million and stolen from Malaysia, had been found in
Singapore.
The vehicles consist of Toyota Hilux (14 units), Honda CRV (5), Toyota
Fortuner (3), Nissan Frontier (3), Toyota Innova (2), Toyota Camry (1), Toyota
Avanza (1) dan Nissan X-Trail (1).
Bukit Aman CID director Bakri Zinin said on May 6, Malaysian police went to
Singapore to retrieve the vehicles which were confirmed to be stolen from
Malaysia based on the police reports lodged.
"The police from both countries discussed the cases where only one was not
reported due to repayment problem," he told a news conference, here, Friday.
He said the recovered vehicles were now placed at the Telekom Complex in
Section 17 here, and the owners would be identified through the original
registration number of the vehicles and insurance companies under which the
vehicles were insured based on the records.
Bakri said police believed that more than two syndicates were involved in
stealing the vehicles and smuggling them to Singapore before they would be taken
apart due to the high demand for car parts.
"Based on information from Interpol, vehicles stolen from Malaysia had also
been found in Dubai, South Africa and Eastern European countries," he said.
Bakri also said that police would seriously study the proposed use of a
vehicle passport for every vehicle leaving the country through any of the border
checkpoints to prevent the smuggling of stolen vehicles from Malaysia.
He said at the moment there was no recording of the duration of any vehicle
in another country after being taken out of Malaysia.
The police were now discussing with the Transport Ministry and Road
Transport Department and other agencies on the proposed vehicle passport, he
added.
