S. Korea`s Lee eyes visiting Japan on June 28, Kyoto summit planned
TOKYO, May 16 Kyodo -
South Korean President Lee Myung Bak is planning to visit Japan on June 28-29
to meet Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso as part of so-called shuttle
diplomacy, diplomatic sources said Saturday.
The two countries are also considering holding their summit in Kyoto, with the
aim of demonstrating the relaxed nature of the two leaders' relations by having
an informal meeting in a regional sightseeing area rather than formal talks in
Tokyo, the sources said.
At the talks, Aso is expected to exchange views with Lee on the prospects for
the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program and repeat Japan's call
for South Korea's cooperation in resolving the abduction issue, they said.
Global warming and countermeasures against the spread of the new influenza
strain are also likely to be on the agenda of their talks, the sources added.
In addition, Aso and Lee are expected to reaffirm the need to promote stalled
talks over a bilateral free trade agreement and cooperate toward the
stabilization of Afghanistan and Pakistan, the sources said.
The planned visit may be rescheduled if the Japanese political situation
becomes more uncertain with regard to the dissolution of the House of
Representatives.
The two leaders agreed that Lee would visit Japan in 2009 when Aso visited
South Korea in January.
