UAE capable of testing for swine flu
Abu Dhabi, May 20, 2009 (WAM) - Two laboratories in the UAE possess the capacity to test for the H1N1 Type A Influenza Virus, or swine flu thus improving the country's chances of dealing with an outbreak. "We have at least two labs recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to test for the virus," an official with the National H1N1 Committee told Gulf News.
Previously, any tests had to be done in Oman, which hosts a WHO laboratory.
He added the move helps bolster the country's capabilities to deal with a possible outbreak quickly and efficiently. "There is continuous work around the clock in various departments, health authorities and others, to make sure we're up to the responsibilities to monitor cases and deal with the cases if there are any here," he said.
However, he refused to name or divulge the locations of the laboratories to prevent the labs from being swamped. To date, almost 10,000 cases have been reported in 40 countries, with the highest number of cases in the United States.
