One adult from New York quarantined for suspected flu
SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korea quarantined one adult passenger arriving
here from New York on Saturday, suspecting he may have been infected with type-A
influenza, officials said.
The 28-year old man, who was studying in a U.S. college, was isolated after
showing symptoms during an inspection at Incheon International Airport, west of
Seoul, officials at the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. He
has been placed under observation in a nearby facility, they said.
As of Saturday, 16 people are under observation for suspected flu.
South Korea had been considered relatively insulated from the highly contagious
virus until last week, with just four confirmed cases reported.
The number grew sharply earlier this week after several foreign English teachers
employed at the same language institute were found to be infected over the
weekend, raising concerns the virus might be spreading through person-to-person
contact.
South Korea's health authorities have now confirmed 33 cases of Influenza A so far.
According to the latest tally by the World Health Organization, 48 countries have
officially reported more than 13,000 cases of influenza A infection, including 95
deaths. Most deaths have occurred in Mexico and the U.S.
