Enteric disease breaks out in cyclone-hit WB; one dead

Gosaba, May 30 (PTI) At least one person died after
enteric diseases broke out in worst-affected areas of
cyclone-hit South 24 Parganas in eastern Indian state of West
Bengal, a senior official said Saturday.

"Enteric diseases have broken out in some areas because
of delay in clearing of carcasses, while clean drinking water
has become scarce with most tubewells getting filled with
saline water," District Magistrate Khalil Ahmed told PTI.

The administration is providing Rs 200 to villagers for
each carcass buried, he said.

On the slow pace of relief distribution, he said this was
because some areas were very remote.

Ahmed said 265 camps have been opened to shelter 50,000
cyclone victims.

There were 65 medical teams working in cyclone-battered
Gosaba, Patharpratima, Kultali, Namkhana, Raidighi, Sagar,
Basanti and other areas, Ahmed said.

Terming as "enormous" the devastation caused by Cyclone
Aila, the District Magistrate said nearly 1.52 lakh houses
were completely destroyed. PTI
