UK Ambassador: "Catalytic Climate Action In Iraq" Project Will Support Confronting Climate Change And Managing Trans-Boundary Waters

Baghdad / NINA / - The British Ambassador to Iraq, Mark Bryson Richardson, confirmed: "catalytic climate action in Iraq" project will support the implementation of the document of defined contributions to confront climate changes and manage trans-boundary waters. Richardson said, in a statement to a group of media outlets, including the Iraqi National News Agency (NINA) today, Wednesday, "I commend the Iraqi government for its rational leadership in achieving climate security, and without this leadership, the future of many Iraqis will be at risk." He explained, "The Iraqi government made courageous commitments at the 26th session of the Climate Conference, which was held in Glasgow last year, and the Iraqi government must continue to advance these commitments during the next 27th session," noting that "climate change is a real threat to the world that cannot be confronted only through countries working together.” He continued, "The Iraqi government, including the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Environment, has constantly emphasized interest in this file and raised the level of climate awareness during the past year, and I see an increase in policy management and participation to work on this issue." The British ambassador said, "During our visit to the governorates of Basra and Anbar recently, I witnessed for myself the impact of climate change and the lack of access to energy, and it has a real impact on the well-being of millions of Iraqis." He explained, "We can all feel the temperature rise in Iraq and there are more dust storms, as well as the most common drought, with 34% of the lands already suffering from desertification beforehand. We need to mobilize the efforts of the private sector, investment, technical and media expertise, and most importantly from that common commitment to bring about change for future generations." He added, "We have to work from now on, and the United Kingdom has given its consent to enter into a partnership with the Iraqi government as part of supporting Iraq in the National Determined Contributions document for climate in Iraq, and the United Kingdom can help with expertise and launch international funding and facilitate access to investment support by the United Kingdom for the important transition to the green energy sector,” stressing that “one of the ways to confront drought is that Iraq has a number of essential elements for a successful transition to a sustainable green economy, and to address the current and future risks of climate change.”/ End
