June 1 co-organised activities of International Children’s Day for 80 HIV/AIDS
infected children and children of infected parents in northern Bac Ninh province.

The day is part of an Australia Government-sponsored programme with the Bright
Future Group with a total aid of 78.3 million VND given through the Australian
Government’s Direct Aid Programme.

It aims to create a meaningful playground for the children and integrate them into
the community, minimising stigmatisation and discrimination against HIV/AIDS
sufferers.

It also aims to raise awareness of local decision makers and communities, improve
skills for care givers and provide direct support for HIV/AIDS infected children.

The money will be spent on buying clothes and toys, medical check-ups and
treatment for children infected with the fatal disease, said Pham Thi Hien, head
of the Bright Future Group in Bac Ninh province.

According to the Australian Embassy, the Australian Government has pledged to
provide over 1,456 billion VND for development cooperation programmes with
Vietnam during the 2008-2009 fiscal year. This includes more than 132 billion
VND for HIV/AIDS programmes.-Enditem
