Japan, OSCE to host meeting on military transparency, other issues

TOKYO, June 8 Kyodo -
Japan and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will co-host
a two-day conference from Wednesday in Tokyo to discuss military transparency,
energy security and other issues, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said Monday.
Regarding Asia's security situation, Japan is expected to touch on North
Korea's second nuclear test in May and stress that the international community
should jointly move to denounce such acts, a ministry official said.
The third Japan-OSCE conference will be attended by OSCE members as well as
Asian partners, such as South Korea and Afghanistan.
The OSCE is the world's largest regional security organization, with its 56
member states including European countries, the United States, Russia and the
former Soviet republics. Japan is one of the partner states for cooperation.
The first and second Japan-OSCE conference was held in 2000 and 2004 in Tokyo.
The OSCE is the successor to the Conference for Security and Cooperation, which
originated in the 1975 Helsinki Final Act signed to create political and
military detente in Europe.
