Hiroshima launches `Obamajority` campaign for world without nukes
HIROSHIMA, June 10 Kyodo -
Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba announced Wednesday that the city will launch a
series of ''Obamajority'' campaigns to back U.S. President Barack Obama's
recent commitment to abolish nuclear weapons.
Akiba named people seeking to eliminate nuclear weapons around the world
''Obamajority'' citizens, a coined word he also mentioned during his speech at
a session of the preparatory committee of the 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty Review Conference held in the U.N. headquarters in New York last month.
In a bid to totally eliminate nuclear weapons by 2020, Akiba said the western
Japan city will create a campaign website, memorabilia including T-shirts with
the campaign logo and a PR song for the campaign, in cooperation with Mayors
for Peace, a nongovernmental organization which he chairs composed of about
3,000 cities around the world that support the abolition of nuclear weapons.
Akiba will also call on the city of Obama in Fukui Prefecture, which
enthusiastically supported Obama, then Illinois Senator, during his run in the
U.S. presidential election, to take part in the campaign.
Akiba told Wednesday's press conference, ''The presence of the (U.S.) president
who manifests the concept of the total abolition of nuclear weapons is
significant for Hiroshima. It is meaningful to send out the message of an
atomic-bombed city (to the world) using his name.''
