Abductee kin worried over effectiveness of U.N. resolution on N. Korea
SAITAMA, Japan, June 13 Kyodo -
A family member of a Japanese citizen abducted by North Korea expressed concern
Saturday about the effectiveness of a new sanctions resolution the U.N.
Security Council adopted Friday in response to Pyongyang's nuclear test in May.
''The resolution is tougher compared with the last one (adopted when North
Korea conducted its first nuclear test in 2006), but I am worried about its
effectiveness,'' said Shigeo Iizuka, 71, brother of Yaeko Taguchi, who was
taken to North Korea in 1978 when she was 22.
''Japan and the United States need to impose additional sanctions,'' Iizuka,
who serves as chairman of the Association of the Families of Victims Kidnapped
by North Korea, said in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture.
Noting that North Korea's nuclear and missile development poses a threat, he
urged the Japanese and U.S. governments not to forget the abduction issue and
expressed hope that they will send a message to Pyongyang that the sanctions
are also in response to its ''unfaithful attitude'' in dealing with the
abductions.
