Luang Prabang has a plan to earn more tourist dollars

(KPL) The World Heritage town of UNESCO, Luang Prabang province plans to earn US$100 million by 2010 and US$140 million by 2015, according to a report that was revealed during a meeting on developing tourism in Luang Prabang last week.
Deputy Head of Tourism Division of Luang Prabang province, Mr Khamtanh Somphanvilay said that Luang Prabang would do more to make full use of its cultural, natural and historical tourism sites to attract more tourists.
He also said the province was making plans to increase more activities for tourists, such as bicycle riding, forest adventure and to step up dissemination of information by the temples.
There is a need, he said to increase the number of hotels and other service outlets for tourists in the province.
Although the tourism industry in the province suffered from the ongoing global economic meltdown, but he believed that the figures for foreign tourist arrivals to the province for 2010 and 2015 would be 500,000 and 700,000, added Mr Khamtanh.
Such an increase, he said that would help to create 17,000 jobs for the local people in the province.
The tourism sector would alleviate poverty and its contribution could be as high as 50 to 75 per cent of the poverty reduction effort of the government, Mr Khamtanh said.
