Australia – Laos hold inaugural business forum on mining

(KPL) The Minister of Planning and Investment, Dr Sinlavong Kouthphaitoun, together with the Australian Embassy and the Australian – New Zealand Business Association in Laos (ANZBA) held an inaugural informal business forum on 11 June in Vientiane.
Chaired by Dr Sinlavong Kouthphaitoun, the Forum provided a targeted discussion on key issues, opportunities and challenges involved in promoting Australian investment in mining and mining support services in Laos, according to the source from Australian Embassy in Vientiane.Australian companies active in Laos joined together with representatives from a range of Lao Government Ministries and ANZBA, to explore ways to deepen and broaden investment ties between the two countries.
‘When we talk about expanding business opportunities for Australia and Laos, it is no surprise that mining and mining support services should be the focus of our inaugural Forum,’ the Australian Ambassador, Dr Forster said.
‘Australian companies have a strong track record of doing business in Laos,’ Dr Forster observed. ‘Through partnership with the Government of Laos and local communities, they have created the flagship mining projects in Laos and they have set benchmarks in environmental, financial management, community and human resource development standards.’
Australian investments in mining and mining support sectors in Laos have contributed both to Laos’ economic growth and revenue flows, as well as to social and community development and environment protection measures. Forum participants noted in particular the strong focus by many Australian companies on training Lao staff and developing local expertise.
Australia and Laos hope to hold future forums to explore new business and investment opportunities in other sectors, such as tourism and hospitality. Australia and New Zealand signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with ASEAN (the AANZFTA) in February this year, which includes Laos.
The AANZFTA, together with Australian investors’ growing interest in Laos, will create new opportunities for Australian and Lao companies, that will deliver strong economic and social benefits for Laos and the investors alike.
