Iraq Welcomes The Consensual Formula Of The Climate Change Conference And Confirms Its Coordinating Efforts In The Region And The World
Baghdad / NINA / -The Iraqi government welcomed the consensus formula reached at the climate change conference, but it expressed its reservations about one of the clauses that restricts its capabilities to work on implementing its obligations towards the Iraqi people and national interests.
The official spokesman for the government, Bassem Al-Marsoumi, said in a statement: “The government will work to coordinate its efforts with other countries in the region and the world in order to strengthen international action to confront global climate change and for the sake of international, regional and national interests.”
He added: "The Iraqi government expresses its gratitude for the efforts made by the government of the United Arab Emirates, in organizing the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, for the period from November 30 to December 13, 2023, and reaching the final consensual decisions that were reached."
The spokesman explained: “Iraq is one of the countries most affected by climate change, and it seeks to limit them in order to preserve the health of its citizens, its environment, and its agricultural system. Therefore, these decisions are an important step towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, the most important of which is reducing the negative effects of climate change, especially with regard to including the rise in temperatures,” he pointed out: “The final declaration met with objection and reservations from some countries regarding some of its final clauses, but reaching a consensus decision regarding the use of fossil fuels and shifting the negotiation path from limiting fossil fuels to the path of just energy transition is an important achievement for developing and oil-exporting countries.”
He continued: “Moreover, these decisions included a set of strong obligations for the industrialized countries participating in the conference, including providing additional funding to developing countries to support their efforts to mitigate emissions, help them adapt to climate change, transfer technology, build capabilities, and finance the Loss Fund and damages.”
He continued: “The Iraqi government, while welcoming the consensus formula that was reached, expresses its reservations about one of the clauses that restricts our capabilities to work on implementing our commitments to the Iraqi people and national interests.” In this regard, the Iraqi government praises the efforts of the Iraqi negotiators who were able to cooperate with their counterparts from several developing and oil-exporting countries, they must preserve the role of fossil fuels as a tool for development, and prevent the adoption of texts sought by some developed countries, which are harmful to the interests of our peoples.”
He stressed: “The Iraqi government will work to coordinate its efforts with other countries in the region and the world, in order to strengthen international action in confronting global climate change, and for the sake of international, regional and national interests.”/ End
