Oil volatility forces bus entrepreneurs to draw up plans on bus hikes

(KPL) The ordinary people will have to spend more money on transportation if the price of diesel (presently at 6,000 kip per litre) inched it way upwards to reach the 8,000 kip per litre level, said an official of the Vientiane Passenger Transport Association.
Mr Thongphanh Phommasit, Deputy Director of Vientiane Passenger Transport Association said that presently the bus entrepreneurs are absorbing the recent increase in oil price and its members would not hike up the fare of bus rides.
“However, if the volatile price of oil happen to stabilize at or around the 8,000 kip per litre level, then that is the straw that breaks the camel’s back and the association will ask its members to revise the price upwards,” said Mr Thongphanh.
He also said the association has an anticipatory plan and that if the price of diesel convincingly breach the 8,000 kip level the number of bus routes in the Vientiane Capital area would be decreased from 22 to just 18, as they projected that there would be a decrease in the number of passengers.
