Bahrain-Russian relations: A strategic partnership underpinned by historical relations

Manama, May 22 (BNA): The historical friendship relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Russian Federation have reached an advanced level of integration and strategic partnership, supported by significant development in their cooperation across various sectors.

The development of cooperation between the two countries was further bolstered by the exchange of official visits between the two countries, which has reflected on the outcomes of the bilateral relations. This has also positively impacted the shared visions and stances on regional and international developments and challenges; particularly achieving peace in the Middle East, maintaining security and stability, countering terrorism, protecting human rights and achieving sustainable development.

The current state visit of His Majesty the King to the Russian Federation at the invitation of His Excellency President Vladimir Putin will include official talks between the two leaders. The talks are expected to give further impetus to the relations between the two countries, and shed light on regional and international developments, including the outcomes of the 33rd Arab Summit hosted by Bahrain.

The first official state visit of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa was in 2008, when he gave a keynote address that contributed to shaping the future dynamics of the relationship with Russia.

A total of 44 agreements were signed between the two countries during the visits of His Majesty. Some of the main areas covered by those agreements are political, economic, military and security, cultural, scientific, and technological domains. They include the agreement on the Joint Governmental Committee on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation, an agreement on military cooperation, and a memorandum of understanding between the Oil and Gas Holding Company of the Kingdom of Bahrain and Russian Geological Society of Russia on the partnership in geophysical surveying for the exploration and production of oil and gas.

The Joint Governmental Committee has played a significant role in mobilising bilateral cooperation that spanned many areas, including fintech, investments, energy, tourism, judiciary, arts and space sciences.

The Kingdom of Bahrain regards the Russian Federation as a strategic partner, and a key international actor capable of contributing to efforts of achieving international peace and security. In turn, Russia perceives Bahrain as a reliable partner in efforts of peace and sustainable development and a historically renowned gateway to the region, boasting high potential in many key sectors.

The history of the relations between the two countries extends to the tenth century, when Russian "maritime diplomats" crossed to the warmer waters of the Arabian Gulf. Today, His Majesty's visit reiterates the message of peace, as the president of the current session of the Arab League Summit, to establish a pivotal point upon which the strategic partnership between the two countries is further advanced to serve their common interest and those of the entire region.
