Yemen signs environment protection treaty

SANA'A, June 29 (Saba)- Ministry of Oil and Minerals singed on
Monday with British company MTB Cordah Limited a treaty to prepare
policies and standards concerning protecting environment and
studying and evaluating environmental effect in all productive
sector in Yemen.

Minister of Oil and Minerals Salem al-Aidrous and MTB Cordah's
Principal Consultant Stuart Hume signed the treaty. The treaty
includes three main fields, frameworks, legal and technical systems,
preparing executive strategic and control by-law to integral
management and establishing database on wastes and chemicals
emanated from exploration process, as well as curing water resulted
from the process.

The treaty stipulates on evaluating environment effect resulted in
oil and gas industry, surveying, categorizing and managing chemical
substances and waste resulted in oil and gas exploration process
pace with clean production and ecological industry's principles.

The second aim of the treaty is preparing and carrying out training
and qualification programs to promote trainers' competence in
environment fields and occupational safety.

Speaking to Saba, Minister al-Aidrous stated that the treaty aims at
creating national and complete system to manage chemicals and wastes
arising from oil and gas exploration and production.

The treaty, he added, stipulates on providing inclusive consolations
in regard to carry out environmental and social effects off- shore
and on-shore and working on carrying out projects contribute in
developing and promoting local societies.

The treaty is the first of its kind in Yemen.
