EIAST appoints project scientist for UAE National Astronomical Observatory and Telescope project
Dubai, July 1, 2009 (WAM) - The Emirates Institution for Advanced Science '&' Technology (EIAST) has appointed Professor Hamid M.K. Al-Naimiy, Dean of the College of Sciences at the University of Sharjah (UoS), as Project Scientist for the UAE National Astronomical Observatory and Telescope project. The appointment comes in line with the MoU signed with UoS to exchange technical and human resources expertise.
Professor Al-Naimiy, who is also President of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, will lead the formulation of the User Requirement Statement including science, educational and tourism requirements. He will also oversee the general goals and areas of activity of the observatory and its various component including telescopes, instrumentations, planetarium and their use. He will represent the project team in liaison with the astronomy, space sciences and amateur astronomical community in the UAE, and play an active advisory role in the execution of the project up to its completion.
The UAE National Astronomical Observatory and Telescope project is aimed at improving science and astronomical infrastructure, scientific knowledge transfer to the UAE nationals, and raising public awareness and enthusiasm for astronomy as well as promote tourism. Professor Al-Naimiy will give guidance and advice in choosing and testing the best location for the observatory and telescope and will participate in drafting proposal requests and evaluating proposals.
