UNESCO: Intensive Efforts By The Iraqi Ambassador To Restore His Country's Privileges

Baghdad / NINA / -The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) praised the efforts and activities of the Iraqi Ambassador to UNESCO, Asaad Turki Suwari, in supporting and developing the Iraqi cultural and documentary heritage and opening files of other sectors of the organization in Iraq within the framework of his efforts to enhance the Iraqi cultural presence at the international level.

UNESCO stated in a report: "The ambassador, who recently assumed his duties in Paris as a representative of Iraq and a member of the UNESCO Executive Council, submitted, for the first time in the history of Iraq, important requests to the Council that reflect the reality of accelerating the granting of Iraq its privileges that it had lost for a long time."

It added: "In this context, the Iraqi ambassador held a series of intensive meetings with ambassadors of international missions to UNESCO in Paris, as well as meetings with senior officials in the international organization, in which he discussed a number of topics and issues, the most important of which are protecting cultural heritage and documenting Iraq's historical legacy, artificial intelligence and freedom of expression, protecting scientists and activating their rights according to international agreements, as well as education files, in addition to building strategic partnerships with member states."

It pointed out that: "Protecting the documentary and cultural heritage, and including the many historical sites that Iraq possesses across its diverse geography, is one of the most prominent goals of the Iraqi mission to UNESCO, as the Iraqi ambassador stressed the importance of launching the Baghdad Heritage Digitization Project, which aims to convert cultural and heritage documents into digital formats in order to preserve them and ensure their access to future generations, using the latest digital preservation technologies."

According to the report, the Ambassador also urged cooperation with member states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to include ISIS crimes in Iraq on the Memory of the World Register, noting that Iraq faces major challenges in preserving its cultural heritage in light of global changes.

The ambassador called for focusing on artificial intelligence and smart automation programs and benefiting from international programs led by UNESCO that focus on these vital sectors.

UNESCO stated: “The past few months have witnessed continuous coordination with members of international missions through bilateral and group meetings between the Iraqi ambassador and ambassadors of other countries to discuss joint cooperation programmes in the fields of culture, education, communication, information and science, in line with UNESCO’s objectives aimed at promoting peace through cooperation between countries, taking into account the current trends of the Iraqi government’s policy.” End
