Conference on Higher Education that will open at the UNESCO headquarters
in Paris on Sunday. More than a thousand people including ministers and
deputy ministers for higher education of countries from all continents,
international experts and representatives of the private sector will
participate in its work.
"The World Conference is the most significant event in higher
education. The last world meeting of such a large scale was held in 1998.
Thus, the conference will summarize the work carried out over the past ten
years and define some vectors of a future policy in higher education," the
Russian Foreign Ministry said.
According to the UNESCO World Report on education in 2009, the number
of students in institutions of high learning has increased by 51.7 million
since 2000.
The G-8 summit held in St. Petersburg in 2006 was the first to raise
the question of global challenges in education. Its participants voiced
determination to contribute to the creation of a global innovative society
through development and integration of all the three elements in the
"triangle of knowledge" (education, research and innovation), large-scale
investments in human resources, the development of professional skills and
scientific research as well as through upgrading and modernization of the
entire education system to make it meet the needs of the global economy.
Ten years after the first World Conference for Higher Education held
in Paris in 1998, about 1,200 representatives of the UNESCO member states
will confirm the strategic role of higher education in solving
contemporary global challenges - from eradication of poverty to stable
development.
The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko will lead
the Russian delegation to the conference that will close on July 8.
