.Putin to receive int'l metalworkers federation head Tue.

MOSCOW, July 7 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is
to receive Bertold Huber, president of the International Federation of
Metallurgical Industry Unions (IFMIU) and Chairman of the Board of the
German IG Metall trade union, on Tuesday.
The government press service has reported that Putin and Huber are
expected to discuss prospects for the development of Russo-German trade,
economic, and investment cooperation with emphasis on the establishment of
direct contacts between metallurgical industry enterprises. They are also
to consider possibilities for giving greater scope to interaction between
the trade unions of Russia and Germany.
The sides are planning to touch upon the subject concerning the German
government-approved purchase of the Opel Company by an international
consortium involving the Sberbank (Savings Bank) of Russia and the GAZ
Group. The IG Metall Union is a big shareholder of the Opel Company. This
accord is indicative of a new quality of Russo-German co-production
arrangements in the automobile industry.
The IFMIU is one of the world's largest trade union associations that
comprises organisations from over 100 countries, including eight Russian
trade unions.
While in Russia, Huber and the delegation accompanying him are
planning to meet with the leadership of the Automobile and Agricultural
Engineering Union, the the Machine Building, Mining and Metallurgical
Workers' Union, and tour the Volskwagen plant in Kaluga and the
metallurgical mill in Magnitogorsk.
Trade unions traditionally play an important role in the German
economy and the social sphere. Germany has gained a wide experience in the
trade union associations' participation in the management of individual
enterprises and large companies, in the conduct of tariffs-related
negotiaons, and the upholding of guarantees of the social protection of
workers.
In the light of the global financial and economic downturn, the
importance of trade unions as collective upholders of the interests of the
hired workers grows many-fold, the Russian government press service
pointed out.

.G8 summit organisers deny plans to change venue.

ROME, July 7 (Itar-Tass) - The so-called Plan B concerning an
evacuation of the participants in the forthcoming summit in the Italian
town of Aquila exists only on paper, and the government does not intend to
change the venue, said sources in the Presidium of the Council of
Ministers.
However, if seismic activity does compel the world leaders to quit
Aquila, the summit is not to be continued in Rome "for organisational and
technical reasons". Such an option is not envisioned, informed experts
specified. The only way of action in that case would be to evacuate summit
participants and guests.
This is a rather complex operation, considering that thousands of
people would have to be urgently relocated together with the chief
delegates: sherpas, interpreters, security guards, and other persons
accompanying the summiteers, along with 3,500 journalists.
The summit organisers are of the opinion that such a development of
events seems to be unlikely, considering the seismic resistance qualities
of the building, where the summit is to take place: the barracks of the
Coppito financial guards, where conference and residential quarters have
been prepared, the sources said.
