Belarus welcomes Russia-US deal on nuclear arsenal reduction

.

MINSK, July 8 (Itar-Tass) - Belarus welcomes as positive Russia-US
preliminary agreement setting targets for further reductions of the world'
s largest offensive nuclear arsenals and expresses the hope for the
soonest possible practical implementation of the deal, the press secretary
of the republic's foreign ministry, Andrei Popov, said on Tuesday.
"Belarus highly appreciates the decision taken by the Russian and U.S.
presidents concerning further reductions of strategic offensive nuclear
arsenals and conclusion of a new legally binding agreement to replace the
current Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty," he told reporters.
Popov noted that "the current START undoubtedly played a defining role
in strengthening strategic security and stability," he said. "We believe
that effective implementation of the treaty became possible only due to
collective efforts of all member-states."
Belarus as a signatory to the START treaty "made a considerable
contribution to disarmament and non-proliferation through abandoning its
nuclear arsenal," he said.
"We would hail the soonest practical implementation of the
Russian-U.S. agreement signed in Moscow yesterday for nobody to have
doubts about the irreversibility of nuclear disarmament processes," Popov
said.
"We are confident that further success of a new treaty will in many
respects depend on the readiness for joint efforts with the countries that
shared with Russia and the United States the burden of responsibility for
the situation in strategic stability. This success will also depend on the
readiness to guarantee security of these countries," the press secretary
said.

.Economic crimes pose threat to RF and Belarussian economies - IM.

BELOKURIKHA, Altai region, July 8 (Itar-Tass) - Economic crimes pose a
real threat to effective development of Russian and Belarussian economies,
Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said on Tuesday.
At the meeting of the two countries' Interior Ministry Collegium he
noted that at present, Russia and Belarus create common customs and
economic spaces and joint ventures. Last year's bilateral trade comprised
34 billion U.S. dollars.
"Along with this successful implementation of all these tasks in many
respects depends on how effective counteraction to crimes that today pose
a real threat to processes in the economic sector is," he said.
According to statistics, last year 450,000 criminal crimes were
registered in Russia, including 20,300 tax crimes. Moreover, the minister
said there were around 8,400 cases of money laundering, 40,700 cases of
money forgery and 8,000 facts of contraband.
"Material damage from all solved economic crimes totalled 142.5
billion roubles. Around 114,200 people were brought to criminal
responsibility," Nurgaliyev said.
This year's situation observes no drastic change. Over the past five
months 235,000 economic crimes were registered.
"On the rise are crimes in the financial and credit system, foreign
economic activities and property operations. The number of raider attacks
still remains high," the minister said.
