Russia intends to continue visa-free exchange with Japan.
L'AQUILA, July 9 (Itar-Tass) - Moscow has made it clear that it does
not intend to drop the practice of visa-free exchange between residents of Japan and South Kurils despite a decision made by the Japanese parliamentto proclaim South Kurils as the Japanese primordial territories.
"The visa -free exchange that enables Japanese citizens to visit the
Russian islands is the demonstration of our openness and is one of the
mechanisms of building up confidence," Presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko
said after a meeting of the two countries' leaders in L'Aquila.
"As an instrument of humanitarian exchange and building up mutual
confidence it has the right to exist. We believe in the future of this
mechanism if this problem is not politicized," Prikhodko stressed.
Russia and Japan signed an agreement on visa-free exchange in 1992.
