Riyadh, May 06, 2025, SPA -- Executive Director for Geographical Names at the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA) and Secretary-General of the National Committee on Geographical Names Majdi Al-Harbi has been elected as rapporteur and member of United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN).
Al-Harbi’s election marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first Saudi and Arab national to serve on the UNGEGN bureau. His appointment reflects the recognition of his active role within the Saudi delegation participating in the 2025 UNGEGN session, held from April 28 to May 2 in New York.
His election also underscores Saudi Arabia's growing contribution to regional and international cooperation in the field of geographical names. The Kingdom's leadership in geospatial innovation has earned it an advanced standing in global performance indicators.
During the session, Saudi Arabia presented a strategy for the Arab Division of Experts on Geographical Names, outlining its accompanying work program and a framework for developing a unified Arabic Romanization system. The Kingdom also highlighted its experience in geographical name standards, methods of adoption, and the latest developments in their management and standardization.
The presentation emphasized the role of geographical names in preserving national heritage and cultural landmarks, as well as the integration of modern technologies and artificial intelligence to support standardization efforts. Saudi Arabia also contributed scientific posters and digital displays to the Virtual Exhibition held alongside the session.
UN experts reviewed reports submitted by member states, discussed the progress made in standardizing geographical names, and explored ways to enhance their integration with emerging technologies. Discussions also focused on the role of organizations and committees in linking geographical names with sustainable development goals.
