.Monument to Russian philanthropist unveiled in Peterhof.

ST.PETERSBURG, July 12 (Itar-Tass) - A monument to Baron Alexander
Shtiglits was unveiled in Peterhof, an imperial summer residence, on the
Gulf of Finland, last Saturday.
The new tourist attraction kicked off the celebrations of the 304th
anniversary of Peterhof known as a town of fountains. Baron Shtiglits, a
financier, industrialist and an art patron, left a noticeable trace in the
history of the country residence of Russian tsars.
In 1853 the Russian state began the construction of the Peterhof
Railroad. But the Crimean War put an end to state funding. Baron Shtiglits
invested two million rubles in the Peterhof Railroad and covered all the
expenses for its construction.
On July 21, 1857 the first train delivered passengers from St.
Petersburg to Petrerhof.
Concerts, exhibitions and carnivals were held in various parts of
Peterhof.
In the meantime, a florist festival called the 'Imperial Bouquet' was
held in Pavlovsk, another imperial residence outside St.Petersburg. Two
hundred florists from Russia and foreign countries are taking part in it.
The flower festival is timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the
birth of Empress Maria Fyodorovna, the wife of Emperor Paul I.
At least 12,000 people are expected to visit Pavlovsky during the
weekend. The festival's organizers have proclaimed full freedom in
creative work and promised to support new ideas and innovative methods and
debuts in the florist art and park design.
A contest program includes the decoration of vases in the private
garden of Maria Fyodorovna, the making of a historical bouquet or
decorations (like flower garlands, fans, handbags and hats), the creation
of a flower costume.
Visitors can enjoy the landscape design; everybody can participate in
a master class of garden and park design and decoration of the interiors.
For the first time an assembly of stylists accompanied by a fashion
show will be held as part of the florist festival.
