Samadiyat and Qanadeel: Exquisite Craftsmanship in the Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba

Makkah, June 16, 2026, SPA -- The Samadiyat and Qanadeel motifs adorning the Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba embody longstanding Islamic artistic heritage. Natural silk threads blend seamlessly with gold- and silver-embroidered details to create a unique work of art that reflects Saudi Arabia’s enduring care for the Holy Kaaba and its Kiswa.
The Samadiyat are among the Kiswa’s most prominent decorative elements. Crafted in intricate geometric and floral designs and embroidered with gold and silver threads, they draw inspiration from the enduring tradition of Islamic art.
Positioned at the four corners of the Holy Kaaba, the Samadiyat incorporate verses from Surah Al-Ikhlas, including “Allah, the Eternal Refuge (Al-Samad),” visually expressing the meanings of monotheism through meticulous textile craftsmanship.
Beneath the embroidered belt, the Qanadeel motifs form another of the Kiswa’s defining features. Bearing Quranic verses and phrases rendered in elegant Arabic calligraphy, they serve as distinctive visual markers for worshippers performing Tawaf.
Workers at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa produce these decorative elements through a meticulous process that begins with geometric and calligraphic design and continues through printing, weaving, and both hand- and machine-embroidery. Each motif is then carefully integrated into the various sections of the Kiswa.
Through the complex, Saudi Arabia continues to preserve and advance this unique Islamic heritage, using the latest technologies, while maintaining the highest standards of quality and precision throughout all stages of production. The Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba thus remains a global model that combines the authenticity of Islamic art with the excellence of master craftsmanship.
