Kyrgyzstan hosts events dedicated to International Mountain Day

Bishkek, Dec. 11, 2025. /Kabar/. Kyrgyz Republic continues its decade of events dedicated to International Mountain Day, celebrated annually on December 11 by resolution of the UN General Assembly.

According to the presidential press service, the events are being held under the Special Representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic on the Mountain Agenda as part of the implementation of President Sadyr Zhaparov's global initiative, the Five Years of Action for Mountain Regions (2023–2027), approved by the UN General Assembly. The goal of the decade is to draw attention to the strategic importance of mountain areas, promote sustainable development ideas, and engage youth, the scientific community, and civil society in shaping the long-term mountain agenda.

The decade included the following events:

- The 7th International Film Forum of Women Directors, "Mountains," was held in Osh from December 2–5. "Ecology, Women in Cinema – View That Changes the Future," with the support of the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek and the Department of Cinematography of the Kyrgyz Republic;

- On December 4, a roundtable discussion, "Preservation of the Aboriginal Kyrgyz Horse Breed: Current Challenges and Solutions," was held in Bishkek. It was organized by the Institute for Sustainable Development Strategy (ISDS) Public Foundation with the support of Slow Food International and IFA;

- On December 9, the National Institute for Strategic Initiatives under the President of the Kyrgyz Republic presented to international partners the results of the Index of Accessibility of Basic Living Conditions in High-Mountain Communities, as well as the interim results of the working group developing a Comprehensive Survey of the Geographical, Demographic, Social, Economic, and Environmental Aspects of Mountain Territories of the Kyrgyz Republic;

- On December 9, an interschool quiz dedicated to International Mountain Day was held in Bishkek. It was organized by the University of Central Asia (UCA) with the support of the Special Representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic on the Mountain Agenda and the National Television and Radio Corporation. The event aimed to engage young people in the study of mountain ecosystems and develop ecological thinking.

- From December 9–11, presentations and seminars on the development of healthcare ecosystems in mountain regions are being held in Bishkek and Naryn. These events will showcase innovative models of medical care, the "Check Your Health" mobile app, the cardiology cluster project (Cath Lab), and a program to train mountain physicians in modern diagnostic and treatment methods. The organizers are the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic and the M. Mirrakhimov National Center for Cardiology and Therapy.

Number of scientific and educational institutions in Kyrgyzstan are also hosting presentations, exhibitions, mountain cleanup campaigns, forums on climate change, organic agriculture, pasture management, and biodiversity conservation, as well as classroom sessions, photo exhibitions, and debates in schools. Cultural, sporting, and educational events dedicated to International Mountain Day are being held at the Kyrgyz Republic's missions abroad, including exhibitions, lectures, flash mobs, and presentations organized by Kyrgyz embassies in more than 20 countries.
