Military Miracles in Fatherland Liberation War

Pyongyang, July 9 (KCNA) -- The combat for liberating Taejon during the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953) is recorded as a brilliant example of modern siege warfare in the world history of wars.
In the combat, the Korean People's Army killed or captured more than 24 220 enemy soldiers, destroyed or captured over 20 000 small arms, 150-odd guns of different calibers, 40-odd tanks and at least 1 010 armored vehicles and trucks, and shot down or destroyed more than 30 planes.
At that time the enemies, who had provoked the war, had been suffering defeat after defeat and was on the run southward. They set Taejon as the "temporary capital" and deployed aggression forces on a large scale, while seeking foolishly to prevent the advance of the KPA units by taking advantage of the natural and geographical conditions of the Kum River and Mt Sobaek.
With a clear insight into their attempt, President Kim Il Sung advanced an operational policy for encircling and annihilating the enemies in Taejon.
The President, who organized and commanded the Kum River crossing operation of KPA units in the main attack direction at the front, came to the front headquarters in Seoul and indicated an excellent plan for rapidly encircling Taejon. He saw to it that a unit of the People's Army, which had advanced to Ronsan southwest of Taejon, was turned to attack Taejon and some forces of it were made a detour of 40-odd kilometers southeast of Taejon overnight to encircle Taejon.
The movement of the units of the People's Army was so sudden and mobile. So, the enemies did not believe in the fact that they were surrounded, even when they received a report that the People's Army appeared on Mt Kubong south of Taejon.
On July 20, 1950, the units of the People's Army, which had simultaneously launched the attack in the north, the northwest and the west according to the order of general offensive on Taejon City issued by the President, seized the enemies' defensive positions and launched a street battle to tighten the encirclement ring and annihilate the enemies.
The U.S. 24th Infantry Division, which had been bluffing as the "undefeated division", and other enemies were completely destroyed, and Taejon was liberated seven hours after the start of the attack.
Commander of the 24th Infantry Division Dean in poor soldier's uniform was captured by a soldier of the People's Army on his way of escape.
In the wake of the operation for liberating Taejon, the units of the People's Army continued to advance southward, following the arrow of victory drawn by the President. -0-
