Saudi Math Team Departs for China to Compete in 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad

Riyadh, July 12, 2026, SPA -- The Saudi mathematics team departed for Shanghai, China, to participate in the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026), taking place from July 10 to 21, with students representing more than 100 countries participating in the competition.
The IMO consists of two examinations held over two days, during which students solve six mathematical problems, three each day, over four and a half hours per examination.
The competition covers several branches of advanced mathematics, including geometry, algebra, combinatorics, and number theory, and requires exceptional abilities in critical thinking, analysis, deduction, and creative problem-solving.
The Saudi mathematics team's participation reflects the continued efforts of King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) and the Ministry of Education to identify, nurture, and prepare gifted students. It also underscores the Kingdom's commitment to developing human capabilities and enhancing its presence in science, knowledge, and innovation in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
The IMO is the oldest and most prestigious global mathematics competition for secondary school students. Its first edition was held in Romania in 1959 with the participation of seven countries before expanding to include more than 100 countries worldwide. The Kingdom first took part in the Olympiad in 2003 in Japan as a scientific observer and made its competitive debut in 2004 in Greece with a team of four students, maintaining its presence in the international competition ever since.
