2027 SEA Games: Five Additional Sports Approved, Total Now 43
KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- The Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) Council on Friday approved the inclusion of five additional sports in the competition programme for the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia, bringing the total number of sports to 43.
Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary-general Mohd Nasir Ali said the five sports endorsed by the SEAGF Council are dance sport, ice hockey, kabaddi, padel and teqball.
He said the approval followed a series of discussions between the SEAGF and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) after the federation received 30 appeals from National Olympic Committees to include additional sports following the initial approval of 38 sports in April.
“The SEAGF Council has endorsed this proposal, and we can confirm that there will be no further appeals or additions to the sports programme for the 2027 SEA Games.
“The final number of sports is now 43,” he told a press conference after the SEAGF Council Meeting at Sunway Resort Hotel here Friday.
Meanwhile, MASOC chief executive officer Rashid Yaakub said the council's decision officially finalised the sports programme for the biennial Games, with no further additions possible unless another SEAGF Council meeting is convened.
“The main thing is that we have only added five sports and that is final because any further addition would require another council meeting. This is the final SEAGF Council meeting to approve the sports programme, so the total number of sports is now 43,” he said.
Rashid said while venues for the initial 38 sports have been finalised, MASOC is still identifying suitable venues for the five newly approved sports.
He said discussions are ongoing with Sarawak and Penang to host some of the events, although most of the additional sports are expected to be held in Kuala Lumpur.
