Indonesia wins four medals at 2026 AI olympiad

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia won one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal at the 2026 International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) in Astana, Kazakhstan, held from Aug. 2-8.

Indonesian Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan M Fadjroel Rachman said Indonesian students secured medals at the competition, which brought together more than 500 students from 106 countries.

"This is an extraordinary achievement and a birthday gift for Indonesia's 81st Independence Day," Fadjroel said in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday.

The gold medal was won by Luvidi Pranawa Alghari of Pribadi Beji High School. Silver medals went to Matthew Hutama Pramana of Kolese Loyola High School in Semarang and Nicholas Ardi Tirta of Santa Laurensia High School in Alam Sutera.

The bronze medal was won by Avner Maxwell Lim of BTB School Pluit.

The students were accompanied by two mentors from the University of Indonesia: Dr. Muhammad Febrian Rachmadi as team leader and Dr. Adila Alfa Krisnadhi as deputy team leader and observer.

Fadjroel said the students' achievement demonstrated the potential of Indonesia's younger generation to master advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.

He said Indonesia's performance at the competition could support efforts to develop human resources capable of competing amid rapid advances in global digital technology.

"AI is a key driver of the nation's future. This achievement also demonstrates the importance of Indonesia's cooperation with Kazakhstan in higher education and technology research," he said.

Fadjroel expressed hope that the achievement would encourage more Indonesian students to pursue innovation in science and technology, particularly in artificial intelligence and digital technology.

He also said cooperation between Indonesia and Kazakhstan in AI and digital technology continues to grow through delegation exchanges, participation by Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs in the Digital Bridge international meeting, visits to Nazarbayev University, and the deployment of two Indonesian delegations to the 3rd Game of the Future 2026 in Astana.

A memorandum of understanding between Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs and Kazakhstan's Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital is also in the final stages of preparation for signing, he said.
