Kuwait-Qatar electricity synchronization mission successful

Kuwait, July 20, SPA -- A synchronization of the Kuwait and Qatar
electricity network has been announced successful on Monday, marking
the first stage of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) electricity
linkage project.

Board Chairman of the Gulf Electricity Linkage Authority (GELA),
Yousif Janahi told the press, the plan included operation of the
"first stage" states. It consists of operating the first circuit of
marine cables linked between Bahrain and the main network in Saudi
Arabia, through Qatar and Kuwait on Tuesday. This would be followed
by the synchronization process between networks of Bahrain, Qatar and
Kuwait on Wednesday, according to a report of Kuwait News Agency
(KUNA).

Meanwhile, Director of maintenance in GELA, Mohammad Al-Sheikh said
that the Saudi network is linked to the GELA network through a
frequency transformation plant (50-60 cycle), and a trial operation
was successful between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and Saudi Arabia and
Kuwait.

The Gulf electricity linkage project will complete its three final
stages by 2011, an important joint GCC achievements. This project is
aimed at eliminating the need for new electricity plants.
