Statue honoring iconic Iranian artist Akbar Abdi unveiled

Tehran, IRNA – A memorial ceremony marking the 40th day since the death of acclaimed Iranian actor Akbar Abdi was held in the presence of fellow artists, friends, colleagues and family members, culminating in the unveiling of a statue honoring him.

The ceremony, held Saturday evening, featured figures including Iraj Tahmasb, Hamid Jebeli, Farhad Aslani, Kianoush Ayari, Mohammadreza Sharifinia, Mahmoud Kalari, Alireza Khamseh and Salar Aghili. The program opened with Quranic recitation by Hamed Shakernejad and was hosted by Amir Yal Arjmand.

Actress Akram Mohammadi recalled Abdi’s distinctive humor and his enduring place in people’s memories, highlighting their collaboration in the acclaimed film “Mother,” produced about 37 years ago.

Director Behrouz Afkhami said Abdi should not be judged merely by his box-office record or roles, emphasizing his generosity and charitable nature.

Director Kianoush Ayari described Abdi as a figure who had become part of Iranians’ collective memory through his diverse performances and deep understanding of Iranian society.

Abdi’s wife said she still could not believe he was gone, recalling four decades of marriage and his kindness toward family and others.

Friend Shahram Zamani proposed establishing a comedy festival in Abdi’s name to discover and support emerging talents, with his statue presented to winners.
